Grandaddy

Grandaddy was formed in 1992 by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Jason Lytle, bassist Kevin Garcia, and drummer Aaron Burtch. In 1995, guitarist Jim Fairchild and keyboardist Tim Dryden joined the band.

Musically, the band features both guitars in the indie rock style, keyboards reminiscent of Philip Glass's minimalist style and vocals in the key of Neil Young. The band's musical style (somewhat classifiable as indietronic) often combines experimental electronic sounds with elements of folk and rock. Lyrics generally focus on isolation in a high-tech world grafted onto rural American. Common themes in the band's music are wildlife, obsolete technology, robots, incompetency and heartbreak. Lyricist Jason Lytle spent time working in a sewage treatment facility, which heavily influenced many of the songs on The Sophtware Slump.

Around the time that The Sophtware Slump was released, Grandaddy was invited to open for Elliott Smith on his tour for Figure 8. On some nights, Smith would join Grandaddy onstage and sing lead vocals on portions of "He's Simple, He's Dumb, He's the Pilot".

"A.M. 180" from Under The Western Freeway was featured prominently during a sequence in the 2002 British film 28 Days Later. Starting in late 2005, the Grandaddy song "Nature Anthem" could be heard in a Honda Civic Hybrid television commercial and is currently heard in a Coca Cola commercial.

On January 27, 2006, Jason Lytle announced that the band had decided to split up. This was partially due to their work ethic in not releasing music on major labels or playing at typical Ticketmaster / Clear Channel sponsored venues. Lytle spoke to NME: "It was inevitable...On one hand our stubbornness has paid off, but on the other hand refusing to buy into the way things are traditionally supposed to be done has made things worse for us... The realistic part is it hasn't proved to be a huge money-making venture for a lot of guys in the band." He also revealed that the band had a meeting in downtown Modesto during December 2005 to decide on the group's future. The meeting was tense and filled with the airing of grievances, but "far from blows." The feeling at the meeting was described by Lytle as the result of a breakdown in communication between the band members. [1]

The band has no plans to tour on their final album, Just Like the Fambly Cat. Lytle has stated that he intends to continue making music, and has recently embarked on a solo tour. He has also made known his intentions to move from his longtime home in Modesto to Montana.

Marcellus Hall(White Hassle, Railroad Jerk)

Orphaned at age five and moved from one relative to another, Marcellus Hall showed a predilection for drawing at an early age. When he was eight years old he began drawing caricatures on the street for money. In the winter he shoveled snow. Nicknamed "Bingo" at age 15 by his uncle, Hall became known as a troublemaker. He spent his adolescence in and out of reform schools in the Midwest. Finally after years of frustration for his caretakers, Hall began to shape up. A grant allowed him entrance to a local community college where he began pursuing a degree in hotel management. At this stage Hall's penchant for drawing began to take hold again. His professors quickly noticed and soon he was offered a scholarship to attend a commercial art school in Rhode Island. There, Hall fast became recognized as one of the top students. At this time also, Hall began learning how to play the guitar and harmonica. Rumors of his bisexuality circulated as well as his alleged drug use, but these were untrue. Moving to New York in 1987 Hall established himself as an illustrator and as a musician with the band, Railroad Jerk. He published small books of his writings and drawings, and from 1990-93 he created the comic strip, Bill Dogbreath, which appeared in weekly newspapers across the country. He now does illustrations for The New Yorker and New York Press, and sings for the band, White Hassle.

Bishop Allen's August Live ep

"This month's EP took us a little longer than usual because, well, it's a lot longer than usual: 13 songs—a whole show at the Middle East (just one block from Bishop Allen Drive), plus a bonus track from Pianos in New York City, where we've been playing a lot this year.

Wolf Parade Live at Osheaga - 2006-09-03

With their setlist cut short, due to other acts running overtime, they were only able to play seven songs. This led to some rivalry between Dan Boekner of WP and G. "Islands' set at the Osheaga fest in Montreal this weekend was a little overzealous in trying to impress, and so went 10 minutes longer than scheduled. Wolf Parade's set was shortened accordingly, and shortened even further when they faltered onstage for another 10 minutes trying to get their broke-ass gear to work. Dan announced toward the end of their short set that this would be their last song, at which the audience boo'ed. Dan then asked, "What? You guys don't want to hear G. Love?", at which the audience again boo'ed. Passing Wolf Parade on their way to the stage, G. Love scoffed at Wolf Parade somehow having heard them over the PA. Dan, now peaking on mushrooms, grabbed a platter of cheese from the rider and began throwing it at G. during his set. (Doesn't everyone know G. likes cold beverages?) G. threw a beer bottle at Dan's head, and a proper scuffle ensued. Heath Ledger apparently broke it up just in time, leaving G. shouting at Dan "This ain't over Chicken Parade!"

At the end of these tracks you can hear what Dan Boekner of WP says to piss off G Love enough to "scoff".
