A Hawk And A Hacksaw

A Hawk and a Hacksaw (often abbreviated to AHAAH) is a band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They are currently on The Leaf Label. The band mainly consists of percussionist Jeremy Barnes, who was previously the drummer for Neutral Milk Hotel, and violinist Heather Trost. The music is mostly instrumental with occasional unintelligible vocals, shouts and cheers. When playing live, he plays all of the instruments himself, simultaneously, often employing unconventional percussion methods such as striking a cymbal with a drumstick attached to his head, and wearing a hat covered in small bells. The band has toured with The Olivia Tremor Control and Beirut.

Saw them open for Of Montreal day before yesterday, actually. At first it was a bit 'WTF?' since they have that Russian folk-music sound - which, after a spunky DJ and before the glam-rock Of Montreal persona was unexpected, to say the least - but once the initial shock passed they were quite brilliant. Had a drummer, though, so didn't get to enjoy the multi-tasking of Mr. Barnes.
