Wolf Parade Live, 2004 (Earliest Known Live Recording)

Recently, as in very very late last night, I stumbled upon a live Wolf Parade recording more than ten months older than the 31 live Wolf Parade recordings I already had. This recording is from a tour in which Wolf Parade opened for Modest Mouse and The Walkmen in a place called the Rostraver Ice Garden south of Pittsburgh. They played ten songs, two of which had never been recorded live (as far as I know), Killing Armies and Same Ghost Every Night. (Same Ghost Every Night was recorded three months later in a CBC Radio Session, but I believe that is different than a true live show.) Also worth noting is the song selection, six Dan songs versus four Spencer songs. Special thanks to Ryan Schwartz for recording and sharing the show.

For my college radio station WHCL I had to put together a 2011, so I'll share it here too even though I haven't posted in how many years? We were required to write about our favorite (hence the paragraph below) and put genres, so I got creative with my adjectives.

Part of the Neutral Milk Hotel Boxset, the Ferris Wheel On Fire 10” is a gem. As a Neutral Milk Hotel nerd I had heard seven of these eight songs before, “Home” is entirely new having never been released nor bootlegged. That said, each of these eight tracks are perfect and flawless examples of what Jeff Mangum/Neutral Milk Hotel was. While this is not as cohesive as either of the full albums (most of the tracks were recorded at different times), this 10” flows as if each piece was meant from the beginning to be included here.

The new record has been titled Dragonslayer after the 1981 Matthew Robbins directed fantasy movie of the same name (niiiice) and will hit stores on June 23rd on the Jagjaguwar label.

The record comes two years after their acclaimed 2007 LP Spirit Lover (though we still think their 2006 self titled EP is the bands highlight so far) and will comprise of a total of eight songs.

Chet

Chet is another Canadian indie band that's awesome. For the most part, mellow, full of soul, and just really enjoyable. Chet is Ryan Beattie (who has played with Frog Eyes) and his brother Patrick, who are currently being accompanied by Megan Boddy (of MeatDraw) and Thomas Shields and Matt Skillings (who are both in Run Chico Run). They've recorded an album called Chelsea Silver, Please Come Home which should soon be out on Absolutely Kosher. There's a track from each album below, they all rock.

Ganache

Ganache is that guy [Thom Stylinski] from The Whiskers, just without all those other folks. His record, an EP titled A Halter Pardon Him And Hell Gnaw His Bones! will be released by Awkwardcore come a week from next Tuesday. Its got four tracks, one of which has been released another of which has been remixed (by Matt Vuchichevich) for your listening pleasure. I can assure you that the EP is quite good, to simply put it.

This is going to be good. "Enemy Mine" is the second album from the supremely talented Swan Lake. For all music lovers it will be released on March 24, 2009 on the Jagjaguwar label. For those not familiar, Swan Lake are the insanely talented Spencer Krug, Dan Bejar and Carey Mercer. Mercer actually found the album cover art from a painting he purchased for $25 in an antique shop in British Columbia. Go figure.

This will also be a celebration party for our newly elected president, Barack Obama.

Shilpa Ray will be there. Her happy hookers will be there. You know it's true. The fun goes from 11pm to 1am.

At this point, chances are that you are torn between this show and the Hugga Broomstik show at Glasslands and the show at the Sidewalk Café. "i recorded on Ben Folds' song "You don't know me". I knew of him, but I met him for the first time in the studio. He was immediately cool. Funny, nice, and also good. That's important if you are to sing with someone. You want them to be like that. His new record just came out and we are going to do the song together on Conan O'Brien, (who rules!... in a non- evil- power- hungry way), and i'm very excited. I may even get to be on TV standing and not sitting, for the first time ever... though i may get spooked last minute and beg Ben to let me sit behind the piano and hide as usual... Ah... i just made myself nervous and it's not till Oct. 2nd... yes... the feeling of utter fear and panic, so familiar and yet new and terrifying in its own special way every time...

So... a lot more things happened... a record has been started, and not finished yet... a rainy and incredibly happy show was played in Brooklyn, with Dan, Eleanor and Surai on strings, and special guests Only Son and Reggie Watts helpin' me out in the big big swimming pool (thank you everyone who sported the wet puppy look, stood in the rain and hung out! special thank you to Brumstix, i will have to write back to you dear peeps at some later point, when i can do it justice, but let me say it is such a thoughtful and touching and beautiful gift you made!!! i love that book...)Outlands festival was amazing, and i got to hear Tom Petty live for the first time ever... Nick Thorburns "Reefer" preps debut album

Reefer is Nick Thorburn and Daddy Kev (TRUE). They met through their friend Giovanni Marks in front of the Celebrity Center in Los Feliz, LA (J/K). 'The Life Narcotic' is their mini-album with six sun-dripped songs and three hilarious interludes (TRUE). Recording for the project began on the Maui coastline in Turtle Town (TRUE) in March 2007 and was concluded a month later in downtown Los Angeles (ALSO TRUE).

Alpha Pup Records is now looking at a release date of October 14 for the "The Life Narcotic" the debut "mini-album" from Reefer, the Nick Thorburn and Daddy Kev collaborative project. Features remixes by Dntel and Flying Lotus. Epic artwork by Kozyndan too. Here is the first track that was featured today on Pitchfork...

Railcars - Cities vs. Submarines

This Record is the product of Aria C Jalali, a Los Angeles native, Recording and Preforming as Railcars in the San Fransisco Bay Area is On the verge of an anticipated 5 song e.p. entitled Cities vs. Submarines. The e.p. will be released on Gold Robot Records Sept. 08, and the sound is "a ten minute journey into Aria Jalali's most vivid, reoccurring dreams. Railcars is an attempt to bring the images that have haunted Aria's mind to life using drum boxes, synths, and noise pedals with sentiments recreated in lyrical form."

Cities Vs. Submarines was recorded in Jamie Stewart's kitchen (pictured below). Sounding similar to Xiu Xiu, Handsome Furs and a meandering into Frog Eyes, the record is impressive enough to catch the ears of Dan Boeckner (Handsome Furs, Wolf Parade), who asked Railcars to join them on a stretch of their tour back in April 08. Jalali's vocals are soft and erratic and beautiful testing the occurring thought that good indie music can exist with elctro-sound.

We’re very proud to be releasing the Shine A Light 7” with Handsome Furs (Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade) and Adam Franklin (Swervedriver) covering a track by each others “other” band…

Fans were searching for it. What happened to the “Shine A Light” Wolf Parade cover that was supposed to close the highly anticipated Adam Franklin debut Bolts of Melody? Adam had been closing shows with the song on tour and it was in the press releases for the record, but, upon release, it wasn’t there. Did a recorded version exist?

Then, there it was, posted on myspace. A lush, intimate version of Shine A Light as only Adam Franklin could do it. But, 2 days later it was removed. “Could you put it back?” “Post the mp3?” One fan went so far as to ask whether Adam was too much of a rock star to take 30 seconds to personally send him the .mp3. A slew of responses erupted on the blog.

One note came from long-time Swervedriver fan and White Whale founder, Ryder Havdale. Ryder was friends with Dan Boeckner who’d written Shine a Light, and, sure enough, a light went on…. What if Dan would record a Swervedriver track? A quick call was made and, as it turned out, Dan too was a fan of Swervedriver. “When I was 12, if you told me Adam Franklin would cover one of my songs in the future I would have freaked!”

This month marked the return of Swervedriver with a showcase at Coachella and the first official tour in 10 years. Adam is recording his second solo album as Adam Franklin and has just released the debut for his latest project, Magnetic Morning.

Dan has just finished recording the sophomore Wolf Parade record and Handsome Furs are currently working on their follow-up record. Dan and Alexei of Handsome Furs are covering a yet to be announced Swervedriver track and the 2 tracks will be available as a limited edition 7” on colored vinyl as well as digitally.

Adam Franklin’s cover of Shine A Light is available on iTunes now! Or You can stream it From HERE!! The Handsome Furs track will be available once the 7” is ready. Expect it early summer.

Featuring Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson and The Blackboys as the supporting act.

I arrived at the "Merc" around 8:30 and was down with a serious case of the sniffles, quickly snagged a signed copy of the 'Rebel Side of Heaven' on 7" vinyl and caught the MBAR act. The set started pretty lazy and although the mood was playful it took a bit to get into even being there. His set, of course, won me over and took me through a performance diving in and out of his newer material and tracks of his recent release Self-Titled (The Summer of Fear)MBAR. Buriedfed, was the highlight of his set surviving nearly 9 minutes and engaging the audience to show some pulse. After all, its Miles Benjamin. It maybe a little foreign still, for some, and ahead of their time, for others but their kids are gonna LOVE IT!
After a rather short set came Hoots and Hellmouth. That Hoot-a-Nanny went on for a good hour or so. And, despite the anticipation for Langhorne Slim, i enjoyed their music and was entertained by the stomping percussions. If their are any hard-core fans that read this post; i have a few songs recorded and could make them available to you if you message me.
Finally, celebrating his Record Release, Langhorne took the stage and with immediate appreciation and a smile, he made no secret, that he was their to throw a party. His set was off the charts amazing and the room was a huge freakin' Love Fest. He played fast songs and slow songs, beautiful songs and mystery songs. And when it was done and all the cables were unplugged the band walked off the stage and Slim remained for an acoustic "Rebel Side"; left to the crowd for a memory of a great show and a sign of the future. Langhorne Slim will be back in NY playing a couple of Brooklyn gig at the Musichall of Williamsburg and @Soundfix Records, also in Williamsburg, in a couple of weeks. And as always I was recording....

Destroyer Live @ Bowery Ballroom 4.23.08

Warm nights spent outside the Bowery Ballroom smoking cigarettes and watching scurried individuals is when i know spring has officially come. And no better way to bring in the spring than a much anticipated show: Destroyer. As a long time fan I've had a growing concern that Dan Bejar would never surface from hiding to put on a New York preformance. Finally, a couple months back, I was able to catch a show featured earlier on this blog @ Glasslands in Brooklyn, after the release of his "duet" album with significant other, Sydney Vermont, (Hello Blue Roses : "The Portrait is Finished and I Have Failed To Capture Your Beauty...") . Seeing Dan perform was dark, enchanting and certainly leaving me X-ing off the calendar days in anticipation for the tour supporting Destroyer's 2008 release, "Trouble in Dreams", his first album in two years after the highly acclaimed success of 2006's "Destroyer's Rubies". Although, only four songs recorded well enough for listening, the show was no dissappointment. His poetry flowed like a rushing river through the crowd and Dan was as shy as a bay lamb between selections. My ears will remain peeled for any news suggesting a Swan Lake follow-up with colaborators, Spencer Krug (Wolf Parade, Sunset Rubdown) and Carey Mercer (Frog Eyes) and until then i will be listening the the following live tracks like its my job.

The opening acts included: Colossal Yes and Andre Ethier. Both were entertaining, however, I fully enjoyed the Andre Ethier set and recommend them to anyone who likes Dylan-esque flannel wearin tunes without regard for perfectly pitched vocals and beauty.

The planets are aligned. On a very special Friday (not Saturday this time around, sorry) Low End Theory commences for the third time in New York City. It's another double-headliner situation, featuring Megasoid (Sixtoo and Hadji Bakara) from Montreal, and Blank Blue from Los Angeles. Plus jet setting residents D-Styles and Gaslamp Killer, and local resident Eliot Lipp. Low End Theory NYC is co-presented by Konkrete Jungle and the Knitting Factory. First off for anyone who hasn't heard the Wolf Parade news... Their album will be released on Sub Pop on June 17th!! It was recorded and engineered by drummer Arlen Thompson. The cover artwork will be a collaborative effort between Matt Moroz and Elizabeth Huey . The album is still untitled, but here is the tracklist...
