The Nick Hallett Songbook @ Joe's Pub NYC

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

More than thrilled to roll out a collection of his original songs, "ubiquitous downtown music hero" (Counter Critic) Nick Hallett is joined by a cavalcade of the city's most vibrant creative forces for what promises to be a rarefied affair of signature melodies and clever lyrics, with a soupçon of revolution thrown in for necessity. More than a few songs from his band, Plantains, a mainstay at long-lost Fez Under Time Café, will be resurrected on March 1st at Joe's Pub!

Full band includes Mike Jackson on upright bass, David Justh, Zach Layton on banjo, and Alison Zlotow on violin, with Micah Young directing the ensemble from behind the keyboard.

The Performers include:

KATIE EASTBURN sings solo and with the band Young People when she's not dancing or directing the viBe Theater Experience for young girls.

ANA MATRONIC, currently on break from touring the world with pop group Scissor Sisters, has a new experimental solo performance in development.

KENNY MELLMAN, the city's most "inspired pop musicologist," is often confused as the sage collaborator of kamikaze chanteuse Kiki DuRane.

DAISY PRESS, New York's newer music diva, has sung with Bang On A Can and So Percussion.

PAUL OAKLEY STOVALL, accomplished singer, actor and playright (As Much As You Can), will reprise his celebrated rendition of NH's "Day that Everything Went Wrong" from Weimar New York.

IMANI UZURI, New York's "Sun Moon Child," a vibrant and inspiring singer, is in the process of staging of her latest recording, Her Holy Water: A Black Girl's Rock Opera.

DAVID JUSTH is a genre-bending percussionist and original Plantains member.

ZACH LAYTON, apart from being Nick's most enduring collaborator, champions the spirit of the Experimental Tradition through his new media compositions and curations.

MICAH YOUNG brings the golden touch he applies as pianist for Spring Awakening and Mamma Mia to the downtown crowd.

ALISON ZLOTOW plays with the International Contemporary Ensemble, when not moonlighting in the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Yellow Bird Project

Yellow Bird Project is a Montreal-based, non-profit initiative. They collaborate with musicians in designing a T-shirt, then they print and sell them on thier website, and all of the money they make goes to charity. Which charity? Each of the artists gets to choose their own.

They have specifically approached individuals that they think are creative and conscientious enough to make a difference

Some of the bands who they have collaborated with, include Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Wolf Parade, Wolfmother, Stars, Rilo Kiley, Devendra Banhart, and others. They also have a special t-shirt coming out next week, designed by the National.

Dan Boekner of Wolf Parade has just contributed this amazingly quirky design – fittingly representative of the band – to raise money for the Glass Casters Union.

Hello Blue Roses @ Glasslands

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Last night was the Hello Blue Roses show at Glasslands in Brooklyn, NY. I did attend and had a great time! First off, Glasslands is the coolest place to see a show, hands down. Second, this would be my first experience seeing Dan Bejar live, which is something I have been waiting/wanting to do for a long time.

Hello Blue Roses went on at about nine thirty or ten, which was a relief because the show was listed as an 8:00pm start-time, and I didn't get there till about 9:00pm thinking I missed the whole thing. Thier set wasn't perfect and I think it was maybe thier second or third show ever, first ever in the U.S. But even with the blunders and start-overs it was still a great show. I did record some of it, and am happy to share a few songs with you. So without further ado, here are the live tracks...

Intro & Hello Blue Roses

"Pardon My Blues" a Live Wolf Parade Compilation

Wolf Parade is recording a new album, but it won't be called Pardon My Blues. Wolf Parade has played a bunch of awesome songs at awesome shows over the past 3 years. Some have been recorded.
All these songs are unreleased, recorded live, and awesome. Along with edited to remove crowd noise and to transition well into each other from a lossless source, and likely the best quality versions of all the songs. Below are the tracks in this
live compilation, enjoy them, they are quite good.

01. Fine Young Cannibals [also called FYC and Fine Young Cannibal]*
02. Things I Don't Know [also called String Me Along]#
03. Soldiers [also called What You Know Can Only Mean One Thing, Bed's Exploding and Beds Exploding]%
04. Cathedral Bells@
05. Language City [also called Long And Bitter Road]*
06. Stevie [also called On The Radio]*
07. A Day In The Life (Originally by Atlas Strategic)#
08. Billy J. [also called BJ and Call It A Ritual]%
09. Gonna Love You Like I Do^
10. Chinese Way [also called You Will Remember Me Most By My Funeral]*
11. Beds Exploding [also called What You Know Can Only Mean One Thing, Bed's Exploding and Soldiers]@
12. No One Saves The Day [also called Bones and O C'mon]$
13. Crazy Horse [also called Wish You Wouldn't Cry and That Epic 14 Minute Song]%

# recorded on October 18, 2005 at Theatre Plaza in Montreal, Canada
^ recorded by mycarrion on September 21, 2005 at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, WA
$ recorded on September 24, 2005 at the Artspace in Vancouver, British Columbia
@ recorded by billy on August 21, 2006 at the Showbox in Seattle, WA
% recorded by rgsc on August 11, 2007 at the Wolfe Island Music Festival in Ontario, Canada
* recorded by the MeatOmnibus on August 22, 2007 at the Cat's Cradle in Carrboro, NC
Notes: This is a compilation of unreleased Wolf Parade songs which have been recorded live. Each track is from a lossless source and was then edited to remove crowd noise and chatter. None of these are official names at all, though a few could be. Soldiers and Beds Exploding are different songs, Beds Exploding is from earlier recordings and was made into Soldiers. They were each called Soldiers on setlists. Enjoy!

Oh yeah, you can download it. Also you can buy Apologies To The Queen Mary and that super awesome 6-Song EP from 2004.

D.W. Holiday

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Starting with what can only be classified as Space-Rock, this quirky music takes an experimental turn with digital and analog synthesizers, programmed beats, and subliminal messages. The music of D.W. Holiday is mostly about five senses working overtime - but even more so about that sixth sense which allows you to SLOW DOWN and realize your dreams.

D.W. Holiday floats alongside the songs they sing and play. They want the music to be noticed first and foremost, while the lush textures pop and fizzle like drums and wires, the smooth 60's style bass lines buzz, and the synths hum.

Also thier new lp is being produced and mixed by Jace from The Besnard Lakes as we speak!! Here are some songs...

30 Cans from thier 2004 release "Technical Dificulties, Under the Influence"

On Fire from The Wave

Concrete Heart from 2007's "Lincoln"

"I always felt when I was younger that if I was to ever visit San
Francisco, I would want to do a lot of drugs. The few times i have
actually been there, I have not been so lucky to fulfill my dream, but
one night I came close: I walked in on D.W. Holiday performing live and

I suddenly felt like I was on the best acid I've ever taken. And I've
taken a lot of really GREAT acid."

Joanna Newsom @ BAM

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

As you may know, we at Snakes Got A Blog dont usually feel the need to go on and on with our thoughts about the music, instead we let you download the songs that you want to hear, and let the music talk for itself. This time, I cant help but to indulge a little. Last Friday I attended the Joanna Newsom show at BAM. Let me start by saying, WOW!! Now, i've seen a heck of a lot of great shows in my day, but never have I witnessed or experienced brilliance, at this level before in my life. This was the first time I saw JN live, and I was lucky enough to catch her perform with not only The Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra, but also with her Y's Street Band.

Of course I had the recorder along for the ride. I had tech difficulties right in the beginning, and right in the middle of the fourth song "Only Skin", when I was caught by BAM security. So needless to say all that I have to offer to you, at this point, is the first 3 and 1/2 songs of the show(:(). These include Emily, Monkey & Bear, Sawdust & Diamonds, and little more than half Only Skin (runtime. 42 minutes). Here are those songs for your listening pleasures:

Intro Emily
Emily
Monkey & Bear
Sawdust & Diamonds
Only Skin (Cut)

Now by the time I returned from being accosted by these security guards, the song "Cosmia" had just begun. It was wonderful. I wish you could hear it. After "Cosmia" they broke for intermission where I saw Andy Samberg from SNL, who is I guess dating Joanna Newsom (That Lucky Bastard). He was acting pretty gay, anyway I did in fact record the rest of the show after that, although instead of on my lap, the recorder was in my pocket. It came out OK anyway. The second half of the show was Joanna and her Y's Street Band who performed tracks off of Milk-Eyed Mender, Y's Street ep, as well as two new songs (one of which JN played alone), and one cover(JN w/ Kevin Barker). Here are the rest of the songs...

Bridges and Balloons
Book of Right On
Colleen
Inflammatory Writ
Barack Obama (talk)
New Song 1 (Barbara)
Peach, Plum, Pear
Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie
New Song 2 (Esme)
Same Old Man (Karen Dalton cover)

Also Go GIANTS, and who else thought Andy Samberg was Adam Sandlers brother, or was that only me?
